Gainful employment with the New York City Police Department typically requires the passing of a civil service examination. If the individual in question wishes to be a police officer, there will also be some training in the field, and at the police academy. New York City Police Department also hires for a variety of scientific and clerical/administrative positions that do not require attendance at the academy, or the taking of a civil service examination.
